Boy Scouts has always been a male world. World War II forced the women of America to fill the "Male" areas. In the scouting program they had to learn the skills which were normally held by men.
After the war men again entered the scouting program. Those women who had been there left, but many remained. The presence of women in the "Deer Club" of scouting received poor understanding. Husbands were more acceptable to women being in the program.
For a married couple to maintain a close relationship they must have some interests which they share. In the scouting program the children also share this closeness. Both adults act as support and sounding boards to the many problems in scouting. In interviews with both male and female professionals and volenteers I found that the strongest bonding of married couples came when both husband and wife were in scouting. The single parent or the support parent who brings her child to the scouting meeting finds attraction to a male leader less when his wife is also in scouting program. I have found divorce and affairs have resulted when only one half of a couple is involved in the scouting program. It is rare but it does occur.
This was a doctoral thesis submitted to the BSA Atlanta Area Council's College of Commissioner Science. Scouters from the southestern United States attend this college.
